SPEAKERS:-
Austin Stoton, 2 Bedford Row
Austin is a health and safety and environmental practitioner. He covers the entire gamut of health and safety work. In recent years he has appeared in many high profile cases including the Buncefield Disaster, the Tata Steel cases, the Tower Bridge Case, Arcadia and Others and Martin Baker.
He has been instructed in the Grenfell Inquiry since 2018.
Prior to being called he was in private practice as a consulting engineer. Austin has extensive experience of representing directors, sits as a Construction Adjudicator Coroner and Legally Qualified chair of different tribunals. He is the Treasurer of the Health and Safety Lawyers Association.
Katie Sage, Crown Office
Katie was instructed for the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea (“RBKC”) throughout the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, led by James Maxwell-Scott KC. RBKC was the owner of Grenfell Tower and its Building Control department was involved in the refurbishment project. Katie was closely involved in advising on strategy and approach, including advising on the impact of the Charter for Families Bereaved through Public Tragedy on a public sector body. The new Government intends to enact the “Hillsborough Law”, which will make compliance with the Charter a requirement for public bodies in such proceedings.
Since Grenfell, she has been instructed in the COVID-19 Inquiry and the Cranston Inquiry, as well as the 6-week inquest into the Forbury Gardens Terror Attack.
In her health and safety and criminal regulatory practice, she is instructed in cases across a wide range of industries including care homes, construction, retail, agriculture, management and maintenance of buildings, waste management and prisons.
Mark Davies, 6 Pump Court
Mark was called to the Bar in 2017 and has been acting for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in its response to the fire at Grenfell Tower since June 2017.
In addition to his public inquiry practice, Mark prosecutes and defends across a range of regulatory regimes, with a particular focus on health and safety.
Steffan Groch, Partner at DWF
Steffan heads up DWF’s national Regulatory team as well as leading the firm’s ‘go to market’ sector expertise. He is also a former Chair of the UK Health and Safety Lawyers Association.
Steffan now specialises in the topic of Candour, specifically in the Inquest and Inquiry forums. He has found that when clients are candid, it makes our job as lawyers more rewarding and easier. Having transparency and honesty allows for a smoother legal process and builds trust with regulators and in the court of public opinion. Steffan’s experience showcases how in Inquiries and Inquests the wider purpose of those proceedings lend themselves to a more candid approach.
