SUMMARY:Panel & Seminar. Panel - The Duty of Candour & its development sinc
e Grenfell. Seminar - The Law & Process in the Coroner's Court
DESCRIPTION:The Panel Discussion will look at the interesting development o
f the duty of candour following high profile investigations and cases such
as Grenfell\, Gosport and Hillsborough. The speakers are Pete Weatherby Q
C of Garden Court North Chambers who is a leading human rights barrister a
nd an expert on the duty of candour\, having been one of the main drafters
of the Public Authorities (Accountability) Bill 2017. He has acted for th
e bereaved and survivors at Public Inquiries and inquests into disasters a
nd other controversial deaths\, including Hillsborough\, Grenfell and the
Manchester Arena bombing. Ann Ridley and Ken Sutton worked together to es
tablish and support the Hillsborough Independent Panel where their experie
nce of working personally with the bereaved families highlighted the neces
sity for candour. With Bishop James Jones they developed the relevant less
ons which are reflected in 'The Patronising Disposition of Unaccountable P
ower '. That Report proposes that public authorities adopt a Charter putti
ng principles of straightforwardness and learning ahead of defending organ
isational reputation as well as extending the duty of candour to the polic
e service. The relevance of Ann and Ken's work to the health sector led t
o their involvement in the Expert Group shaping the Health Safety Investig
ation Branch. Steffan Groch is the lead lawyer for RBKC post Grenfell wit
h RBKC having signed a Charter of candour.  He is head of DWF’s regulat
ory team and a former Chair of HSLA.\n\nThe Seminar is an essential summa
ry to recent changes in the admissibility of evidence and procedure in the
Coroner’s Court. In particular\, this seminar examines the right tactic
al approach for companies and their officers concerned with reputational r
isk and future prosecution. Tim Green of Henderson Chambers has been consi
stently recommended by Chambers &amp\; Partners as one of the UK’s leadi
ng advocates for health and safety law and environmental work.\n\nCost. Th
is event is free to HSLA members. Non members can join HSLA and attend the
  event free.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;
