This presentation will consider a number of aspects of machinery safety in the work place and more widely, a review of the workplace equipment regulations and the status of ACOPs, HSE Guidance, the statutory inspection regime, risk management and competence, the HSE ‘Working Well Together’ projects.  It will include investigation into accidents, their foreseeability, and potential hindsight bias.  There will be the opportunity to debate the HSE Fee For Intervention (FFI) and how the inspector’s opinion is used to identify a ‘material’ breach.  The speaker, Richard Hulmes is the director of the Safety Assessment Federation (SAFed) which is a trade association representing the independent inspection industry who carry out the statutory safety inspections of the workplace and other equipment.  SAFed works closely with the HSE, management and maintenance industry, manufacturers associations and the construction industry and has a technical network of engineers. SAFed’s main aim is to improve safety in the workplace across all industry sectors. Richard is a chartered engineer with a law degree, specialising in health and safety law, notably the work equipment Regulations. He was with was HM Forces (Army), where he had responsibility for safety of major equipment projects, including munitions, as a member of the Ordnance Board and chair of the NATO Fuze Design Committee. The event will be introduced by Simon Joyston-Bechal who has worked with SAFed. Simon is chair of the HSLA Thought Leadership & Public Affairs Committee and the director of Turnstone Law.

The event is free to HSLA members. If non members wish to attend they can join HSLA and then attend the event free of charge.
