HSLA event in partnership with Alder: A unique perspective of a parent: Legal Accountability after Family Loss

ZOOM ATTENDANCE

Timing:
Thursday 4 June – in-person and ZOOM online
5.30-6.30 Seminar

In this session Richard speaks as a parent and draws on his deeply personal experience in working to secure accountability and systemic change in the NHS and government following the loss of his son, Matthew, in 2020 during a mental health crisis.

His experience highlights how vital it is to balance the legal requirements of an investigation with clear, humane and empathetic communication with families.

To understand more about Matthew’s story, you can find extensive reporting in the public domain.

This session will cover:
•    The NHS Trust’s handling of the initial news of death;
•    The Priory’s Serious Incident Report;
•    His own investigations and use of FoIs and SARs;
•    The fight to get an independent investigation;
•    The CQC response;
•    Inquest strategy of my legal team v the Priory: expert witness challenge, jury conclusion options and PFD;
•    His push for criminal prosecution and how he settled the civil litigation; and
•    What lawyers representing health bodies can do better.

Speaker:
Richard Caseby

Richard is former Managing Editor of The Sunday Times and was a board director of Times Newspapers Ltd for over a decade.

He led teams of lawyers during the worst corporate crisis in News Corporation history, was a consultant to the Director of the Serious Fraud Office and both Houses of Parliament and has given evidence in person to select committees and other government inquiries.

As Director of Communications for Whitehall’s largest department, the DWP, Richard led national policy campaigns for five Secretaries of State. He later worked as Middle East Communications Consultant for the UK Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet Office, advising ministers and Royal Offices in Jordan and Oman.

Host:
Tim Toulmin

Tim founded Alder 15 years ago and provides strategic communications support across a wide range of complex issues, including sudden incidents and fatalities, criminal investigations and trials, civil litigation, inquests, employment disputes, and EDI-related concerns.

Before founding Alder, Tim was Director of the Press Complaints Commission, where he dealt daily with the media, government and senior lawyers on matters of press regulation, privacy and ethics.

He serves as a trustee of several educational and campaigning organisations and works closely with our lawyer partners.
